Erectile dysfunction is a condition in which the erection of the penis cannot be maintained during sexual intercourse. It can be found in men of all ages; however a study of men around the world found that incidence increases with age.
If you have these symptoms, you should see a doctor:
- You have a specific concern or feel that you have had symptoms of erectile dysfunction for more than 2-3 weeks.
- You have abnormal symptoms related to sex, such as problems with ejaculation of semen, too early or too late.
- You have a risk of vascular disease, heart disease, diabetes or other health problems.
Causes of Erectile Dysfunction
There are 2 types of causes, psychological and physical:
- Psychological Causes
The brain plays an important role in stimulating the erection of the penis and encouraging sexual emotions. Some mental conditions that interfere with or negatively affect sexual emotions include stress, depression, or other mental health conditions including conflicts or relationships problems with your partner.
2. Physical Causes
Erectile dysfunction can be caused by underlying diseases such as heart disease, vascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, or Parkinson’s disease.
Erectile dysfunction can also be caused by side effects from the treatment of diseases or by the use of drugs such as antidepressants or antihistamines, as well as smoking, heavy drinking, physical exhaustion, or sleep disorders etc. In addition, any of these conditions can cause a dysfunction:
- Decreased testosterone levels
- Abnormal blood pressure
- Regular use of medication
- Neurological disorders
- Body fatigue
- Physical examination of diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, vascular disease
- Mental health examination by specialized doctors
Treatment of this disease depends on the cause and congenital diseases. If the dysfunction seems to be caused by a physical disease, the doctor will treat the cause, but if treatment is not effective, then the next step will be a new diagnosis to determine the true cause and to select the most suitable treatment for the patient.
If you have erectile dysfunction, you should see a doctor.
You may be able to correct the dysfunction and return to a happy family life. At the same time, examination may also uncover hidden diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, or vascular disease.
Most men think that they do not have problems with erectile dysfunction. Although most people
believe that it is a disease of the elderly, studies have shown that up to 42% of Thai men aged 40-70
have experienced erectile dysfunction.
