Parkinson’s Disease Clinic
We provide treatment for abnormal or excessively slow physical movements found in patients with Parkinson’s Disease, which is most common in geriatric patients.
Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease;
- Rigid muscles
- Impaired and imbalanced posture
Symptoms resulting from rapid physical mobility:
- Myoclonus, Tic disorders
- Dystonia (contractions and twisting of muscles), Chorea (involuntary physical movement)
It is important to decipher the cause of these symptoms and develop an appropriate treatment. Diagnostic equipment includes CT, MRI and PET scans.
Parkinson’s Disease Treatment
A variety of medications are used to effectively reduce symptoms in patients who suffer from Parkinson’s disease, including dopamine substitutes.
Motor Fluctuations: some patients encounter side effects from long-term use of medications which are called motor fluctuations. These can be relieved somewhat using:
– A combination of deep brain stimulation using electrodes as well as a reduction in medication
– Botulinum toxin injection to relieve rigid muscles condition called “hemifacial spasm”, cervical dystonia, muscle spasticity, and transient focal muscle paralysis. This injection blocks acetylcholine from nerve endings that reach affected muscles. It normally takes 3-4 days for an injection to take effect; it will be most effective in the second week of treatment and lasts for 2–3 months. The injection also helps to reduce discomfort from sweating and body odor.
